Vier jaar geleden begon ik als blije brugklasser op de Berger Scholengemeenschap met het plan om zes blije jaren op mijn mooie school in het bos te beleven. Dat klinkt nog steeds als een prima (en immer blij) plan. 
Toch word ik steeds weer aan een heel ander plan herinnerd als ik even om me heen kijk. Ik vertrek naar Italië om mijn school af te maken. 

Een aantal maanden geleden heb ik me samen met zo'n 150 andere Nederlandse scholieren in het spannende selectieproces van het United World College gestort. Na drie selectierondes zijn er 25 leerlingen geselecteerd en geplaatst op één van de dertien colleges die verspreid zijn over de hele wereld. Ik ga naar United World College of the Adriatic in Noord-Oost Italië.

Beginnen op een nieuwe school betekent het Bergerbos verlaten. 
Ik zal afscheid nemen van de veel te kleine gangen, de harde bankjes (die de gangen nog net iets kleiner maken), de grote ramen in het Engels lokaal die verscheidene Break - Free acties veroorzaakten, die overigens altijd mislukten, de leuke kleine bruggers uit mijn hulpmentorklas, mijn lieve klasgenoten en de altijd originele leraren . Ik zal jullie missen.

Dat hele UWC klinkt waarschijnlijk wat vaag voor de medemens. Ik ben er weken mee bezig geweest om een goed beeld te vormen van de organisatie en ik weet nog steeds niet precies wat me de komende twee jaar te wachten staat. 
Knippen en plakken van de website is officieel en onofficieel niet toegestaan en een potje copy/paste is geen spetterend begin van mijn blog carrière, dus zal ik geheel in eigen woorden uitleggen wat UWC is en doet en betekent. 

United World College is een organisatie met dertien scholen verspreid over de hele wereld. Er is bijvoorbeeld een college in India, Wales, Swaziland en Canada. De scholen hebben een IB programma, dat vervangt het Nederlandse 5 en 6 vwo. Ik haal na twee jaar mijn IB diploma (International Baccalaureate). Dit diploma geeft me toegang tot universiteiten over de hele wereld. Ik studeer en woon met mensen vanuit de hele wereld, met verschillende culturen, roots en sociaal-economische achtergronden. 
Naast de lessen besteedt UWC heel veel aandacht aan Social Service; vrijwilligerswerk in de omgeving.
De scholen hebben waarden en een missie. UWC heeft als missie onderwijs als bron van kracht te gebruiken om mensen, landen en culturen samen te brengen voor een vreedzame en duurzame wereld. UWC is een plek waar gewerkt wordt aan vrede, rechtvaardigheid, wederzijds begrip, samenwerking, het vieren van culturele verschillen en duurzaamheid.
Op het college zitten leerlingen van 89 nationaliteiten. 
So many cultures that yoghurt would be jealous :)

"Deze zomer" klinkt nog heel ver weg, zeker met de 24 uur lang regen die zich zojuist vol overgave naar beneden heeft gestort. 
Maar. 
De weken vliegen voorbij. Naast, of eigenlijk frontaal op mijn bureau begint zich langzaamaan een bergje spullen te verzamelen die me steeds wijzen op vertrek. Ook de stapel “belangrijke papieren” groeit geleidelijk. Ik heb mijn zwemdiploma bijvoorbeeld al afgestoft...

Dan rest er nog één belangrijke vraag: waarom - hemeltjelief- doet ze dit eigenlijk?
Ik wil die missie volbrengen. Dit, samenwerken en samenleven met anderen van over de hele wereld, is wat ik wil en ik ben heel blij dat ik één van de 25 geselecteerden ben.

The success of UWC is not measured in terms of academic achievements or job titles, but rather by the impact that UWC alumni make locally, nationally and internationally. The lifelong commitment to UWC values and ethos ensures that the benefits of a single UWC experience are multiplied within each community that UWC alumni become a part of. 

UWC the Netherlands has selected 25 new students, of which 2 from the former Dutch Antilles, to represent the Netherlands at UWC this coming school year, together with the 27 students who started their UWC experience last year.
All of the selected students have gone through a rigorous selection procedure according to international UWC selection criteria. Selection is on merit only. Cultural of political background, religion, race or financial means do not play a role.
The selection process consists of three rounds: a paper selection, a full day of group activities and a personal interview with two selectors (usually UWC alumni); and a final personal interview with four selectors (two UWC alumni, a psychologist and someone with an educational background).

All selectors are trained beforehand and focus on academic competence, social interests and commitment, maturity and balance, plus affinity with the UWC mission and ideals. We appreciate students with a broad range of interests and a drive to both learn and contribute. Previous initiative as well as potential is taken into account. We do not select a certain type of person, but rather a varied group of personalities, who do have something in common: enthusiasm and motivation.
